General Board Member Qualifications

1. Must be a Virginia resident with a strong interest in VSOMP’s mission
 

2. Must hold a current core-level certification from one of the following accrediting bodies:
 

  • IJCAHPO – COA, COT, COMT
  • ABO-NCLE – ABOC, NCLEC
  • OPS – CRA, OCT-C
  • AOA/CPC – CPO, CPOA, CPOT
     

3. Must have at least one year of work experience in an eyecare profession


4. Must attend all board member meetings, either in-person or virtually (approx. 6 per year), and conferences (2 per year)

Open Positions

Executive Director

The Executive Director serves as the lead representative and meeting chair for VSOMP, supporting day-to-day operations and upholding board decisions.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Preside over all board meetings
  • Serve as the official spokesperson and representative of VSOMP
  • Call special meetings as needed
  • Act as secondary signer on accounts
  • Approve general fund expenditures
     

Qualifications:

  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Ability to make sound decisions and represent VSOMP professionally
  • Experience in board governance, strategic planning, or nonprofit leadership 


Communications Director

The Communications Director manages all internal and external communications for VSOMP, ensuring clear, consistent messaging and maintaining member engagement across platforms.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct general correspondence on behalf of VSOMP
  • Maintain up-to-date contact information for all members and directors
  • Manage the website, social media accounts, and newsletter
  • Lead marketing and promotional efforts for the organization
  • Take and archive meeting minutes
     

Qualifications:

  • Strong written and digital communication skills
  • Experience with email platforms, social media, and basic website management
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and responsive to deadlines
  • Familiarity with marketing and member engagement strategies


Coordination Director

The Coordination Director supports event planning and logistics, working closely with the Program Director to ensure seamless execution of conferences and meetings.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with speaker recruitment and gather presentation materials
  • Help draft program agendas and coordinate conference meals
  • Oversee procurement of swag and event supplies
  • Maintain a record of topics covered at each event for the past three years
  • Scout and secure appropriate event locations 
  • Support other event-related logistics as needed
     

Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with team members and speakers
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple moving parts
  • Event planning or coordination experience preferred
